What is “Liturgical”?

Usually the word “liturgical” refers to a certain style of church – it tends to be more formal and traditional, with fancy robes and rituals and such. To us, it means a little more than that…

It’s a lifestyle based on intentional rhythms and patterns. It’s about using tangible things (like food, decorations, music, etc) to foster intentional mindsets and memories.

Most of us already have little life “liturgies” we follow. From our morning coffee routine to our workout regime, or that one movie we watch every December because it just doesn’t feel like Christmas until we do… in a real sense, being “liturgical” just means repeating certain activities to intentionally create desired outcomes or experiences.

For us, being “liturgical” means weaving small, intentional rhythms into almost every aspect of our lives — things that help us understand God better and love one another more.

  • We follow a traditional liturgical calendar – with seasons (usually ~40 days long) of feasting and fasting – to help us appreciate God’s blessings more.
  • We redecorate with each new season, using specific colors with traditional symbolic meanings, to make us more mindful of different aspects of God’s nature and our experience of Him.
  • We use tangible elements (including things like a baptismal font and observing the Eucharist… but also things like… hosting an annual Passover seder, Dia De Los Reyes feast at Epiphany, interactive lessons during Holy Week, and soooo much more!) to help us more authentically engage with God and His Word.
  • And during our worship services, we follow a traditional BCP liturgy with familiar prayers, songs, confessions, and proclamations, because we believe that encountering true, familiar words over and over again helps to re-shape our hearts and minds in meaningful ways.

We don’t do this to be “stuffy” or “traditional.” We do it because we think it’s FUN! (It’s like that warm-fuzzy feeling you get when your favorite Christmas song comes on for the first time each year…except it’s a new happy season every 4-6 weeks all year long!)

Truly, the best way to understand what we mean is to just… come and see. Come be a part of the fun this year!
